These are partial articular fractures of the distal femur involving the lateral condyle in the sagittal plane. The fracture line is simple and goes through the load bearing surface of the condyle. Ref. Manual of Internal Fixation:
184 - 189. 548 - 552.
Surgeon. CS.

As in all articular fractures, anatomic reduction is mandatory. In some cases the X-ray appereance may be misleading. If the CT scan shows no displacement, percutaneous internal fixation may be performed with two cancellous screws for interfragmentary compression.

On the other hand, if there is even minimal displacement or intra-articular small fragments, open reduction is indicated and internal fixation performed with lag screws, sometimes supported by a properly molded small straight plate.
