These are fractures that involve the articular surface of the femoral head with depression of the cartilaginous and cancellous structures. They are usually associated with acetabular fractures. Ref. Manual of Internal Fixation :

These are unreconstructible fractures of very bad prognosis, therefore treated with total hip prosthesis, resection arthroplasty (Girdlestone) or arthrodesis.
