These are extra-articular fractures of the proximal segment of one or both bones of the forearm. Group 1 corresponds to isolated fractures of the ulna, group 2 to the radius and group 3 to the fracture of both bones. Ref. Manual of Internal Fixation:

Because these fractures are close to the complex elbow joint, they suffer large stresses and the displacements are difficult to reduce and maintain. The fractures that involve the ulna are fixed with small fragment plates, either of the one third tubular or of the reconstruction type. The fractures of the neck of the radius, depending on their stability, can be treated by reduction,

by excision of the radial head or by its substitution for a prosthesis. In combined fractures of both bones, the excision of the radial segment will allow earlier recovery.

The A1.1 and A2.1 subgroups require special surgical techniques for reinsertion of small bone fragments that suffer large traction loads.
