Types

The diaphyseal fractures of the long bones are divided into three Types (A, B and C), indicative of an increasing severity.

Simple fracture.
A single linear disruption of the diaphyseal circumference that delimits two fragments.
Wedge fracture.
There is a wedge shaped fragment. Once the fracture is reduced, there is contact between the two main fragments.
Complex fracture.
A fracture with several intermediate fragments. After reduction, there is no contact between the main fragments.

The fractures of the proximal and distal segments are divided into three Types (A, B and C), indicative of an increasing severity.

Extra-articular fracture. The fracture line may be either metaphyseal or epiphyseal but does not involve the articular surface.

Partial articular fracture. The fracture line goes through the articular surface but a portion of it remains united to the diaphysis.

Complete articular fracture. The fracture line goes through the articular surface and separates it completely from the diaphysis.s.
